Grimaldi's Circus

This was made during a really, really challenging and painful week, where I used drawing as a coping mechanism as much as possible to help redirect a lot of distress and overwhelm. I originally intended to draw a bunch of characters from Grimaldi’s circus, but once I got started on the pestiferous vine, it very fittingly took over. I did not use reference imagery for the majority of it, which is extremely rare for me as I don’t typically have a lot of confidence in my capabilities without it. It was a wild, inspiring and confidence-building project to learn to trust myself and see what I’m truly capable of when I let myself explore, make mistakes and just enjoy the process. I will definitely be making more Grimaldi pieces with more characters, but for now I really loved making this dramatically understated pestiferous vine scene with a few circus lemurs and parasitic brain worms hiding throughout the illustration.

All the DCC drawings have been so healing to work on. Seeing people (and myself) enjoying them and responding with so much positivity and kindness, even though I get extremely anxious about them being imperfect, has really helped me let go and just enjoy creating again. So thank you to this wonderful community for that gift.

I think I need to publish some shirts of this inverted version because holy shit am I a sucker for the black options.... Just feels so heavy and intense and I love that.

I hope you enjoy pestiferous vine Grimaldi as much as I loved making him! My only regret is forgetting to give daggers to the lemurs.
